AI Interviews, Explained

AI interview software, in plain terms

What is AI interview software?

AI interview software runs a structured interview with a candidate automatically, then returns a scored, reviewable record of it to the recruiter: transcript, recording, and evaluation, instead of requiring a live call for every applicant.

The practical difference from a video interview tool is what happens after the recording. AI-based interview software does not just capture answers; it evaluates them against the role and produces a comparable result for every candidate. That comparability is the point. Two recruiters screening the same fifty applicants by phone will apply different bars on different days. An AI interviewer applies the same criteria to the fiftieth candidate as to the first.

In Edvenity, this runs on the job itself: enable AI interviews for a posting, and applicants receive a secure interview link automatically. They complete it asynchronously with audio and video, on their own schedule.

How does AI interview scoring and evaluation work?

Every completed interview produces a structured evaluation rather than a single opaque number.

The AI interview scoring output covers an overall score, a hiring recommendation with the decision and the reasoning behind it, role fit, a confidence level, structured technical signals where the role calls for them, and an explicit split between strengths and risks, what the candidate did well, and where they would need support.

Each of those is backed by the transcript and the recording, so a recruiter can check any judgement against the source rather than trusting the summary. That matters for defensibility: an AI interview evaluation a hiring manager cannot audit is not usable evidence in a hiring decision.

Nothing is automatic. Scores inform the decision; recruiters make it. Human review sits in the workflow deliberately, not as an afterthought.

What is AI candidate screening, and when is it worth it?

AI candidate screening is the first-round filter: every applicant completes the same structured interview, and recruiters review scored evidence instead of reading resumes to guess who deserves a call.

It earns its place when applicant volume exceeds the hours available to screen properly. At twenty applicants a role, a recruiter can call everyone. At three hundred, they cannot, so in practice most applicants get a six-second resume scan, and strong candidates are lost to nothing more than queue position. Bulk candidate screening with AI interviews inverts that: everyone gets the same interview, and recruiter attention goes to the shortlist.

The trade-off is real and worth stating plainly. An AI interview is a better first filter than a resume scan and a worse one than an unhurried human conversation. It is most defensible where the alternative was not a conversation at all.

AI interviews vs human interviews: which does what?

They are not substitutes, and treating them as such is the most common way this technology is misused.

AI interviews are strong at breadth and consistency: covering every applicant, applying identical criteria, producing comparable records, and doing it without scheduling. They are weak at everything that requires judgement: reading hesitation, following an unexpected thread, assessing whether someone would thrive on a particular team.

Human interviews are the opposite on both counts. So the sensible division is AI for the first round, humans for the rounds that decide, with the AI interview transcript giving the human interviewer somewhere informed to start rather than repeating the same opening questions.

A team that replaces its final round with an AI interview has misread the tool. A team still manually screening three hundred resumes per role is leaving the same value on the table from the other direction.

Step by Step

From Job Post to Scored Interview

Edvenity keeps first-round screening structured: create the role, send the interview, let candidates complete it, then review the evidence.
